Moxibustion
Moxa is a warming herb used to treat conditions in Chinese medicine caused by cold or dampness. Moxa is often used in conjunction with ginger or garlic.
It aims to dispel cold and dampness, which are considered pathogenic influences in Classical Chinese Medicine.

Moxibustion is a therapeutic technique where dried moxa, typically made from mugwort leaves, is burned to warm and invigorate the flow of Qi within the body. It aims to dispel cold and dampness, which are considered pathogenic influences in Classical Chinese Medicine.
Moxa is usually compressed into sticks or cones that resemble oversized cigars. These are then lit and allowed to smolder, producing a penetrating heat. The burning moxa stick is held close to the skin above specific acupuncture points. The practitioner moves it around until the area reddens and becomes warm. Patients often feel a warming sensation that radiates along the pathway of the meridian being treated, indicating the arrival and movement of Qi.
Moxibustion is commonly used for conditions where pain worsens with cold, such as arthritis or injuries. It helps with conditions like diarrhea or abdominal pain caused by cold, is used to address menstrual disorders or to encourage breech babies to turn in late-term pregnancy, and to strengthen the body’s defenses against colds and flu.
Practitioners often combine moxibustion with acupuncture in the same session to enhance therapeutic outcomes. This combination is believed to synergistically increase the effectiveness of both treatments.
